Last night, my best friend called me because Barack Obama will be at her former undergrad on Monday (fucking Ohio). She thinks she can arrange a meeting. I naturally had to turn her down. Because I have a couple of meetings for Law Review on that day. And if you had to choose between a potential president and a long discussion on type face and the oxford comma, well the decision is clear.
This is really just one more example of what can only be considered a long standing dedication to the future. I strongly believe that it is the duty of every citizen to be politically active. We should all strive for social change. And I try to lead by example:
When Arrested Development got canceled I signed an online petition.
Once in London I walked by a protest of the Iraq war and silently agreed with them before going shopping. Although, I made sure not to speak so no one would know I was American.
When George W. Bush was reelected I read many blogs about it during work hours and chuckled heartily at the wry commentary on our impending doom.
Just today I strongly considered throwing my coke can in the recycle bin instead of the trash. It was too much of a hassle but the thought was there!
I refuse to shop at Walmart... unless someone can give me a ride there.
When someone criticized the writers strike I said that I supported the writers before politely changing the subject. Except I forgot to say I supported the writers and just politely changed the topic. I like to think that it was the support of people like me that led to such a quick resolution. Congratulations WGA! And your welcome.
I like to think that I represent the future. And I have enough of a soul remaining to gently weep about that fact.
